How do I find my own blind spots?
Not by introspecting, because a blind spot is by definition something introspection does not return. The three sources that reach them are other people (who see your behaviour without access to your intentions), your own historical record (predictions and notes written before you knew the outcome), and deliberate tests where you commit to an expectation in advance and check it. Nisbett and Wilson (1977) established the underlying problem: people report reasons for their behaviour with high confidence that experimental manipulation shows were not the actual causes.
Why thinking about it does not work
You have access to the output of your mind, not to its operation. When you ask yourself why you did something, what comes back is a plausible reason generated from what you know about yourself and the situation — the same material an observer would use. It arrives with the feeling of memory rather than the feeling of guesswork, which is what makes it hard to discount.
So more reflection produces more confident stories, not more accurate ones. The methods below all work by introducing information that did not come from you in the present moment.
Three sources that actually reach them
- Other people, asked correctly. 'Any feedback for me?' returns nothing. 'What do I do that makes this harder than it needs to be?' returns something, because it presupposes an answer exists and names a specific domain.
- Your own record. Write predictions down — how long this will take, how you will feel about it next month, what they will say — and read them back later. The gap between the written prediction and the outcome is not reachable any other way, because your memory of the prediction updates to match the result.
- Deliberate tests. Pick a belief you hold about yourself, state in advance what you would expect to see if it were true, then go look. A belief that cannot fail any test is not telling you anything.
The ones that hide longest
Blind spots survive in proportion to how well they are defended. The most durable are the ones with a virtue attached — the standard you hold that also happens to excuse something, the trait you dislike in others that is expensive to look for in yourself, the version of an event where you were reasonable throughout.
A workable heuristic: the areas where you feel most certain and least curious are where the unexamined material is. Certainty without recent evidence is the marker.
Where Emerge fits
Emerge is built to do this from the outside: it holds what you have said over time and asks the follow-up that your own account does not, which is how it surfaces the gap between the version you give and the pattern in the record.

Can journaling reveal blind spots?
Only the part of journaling that creates a record you read back later. Writing about how you feel today produces today's account. Writing a dated prediction and returning to it produces a comparison, which is the part that can contradict you.
How do I get honest feedback from people?
Ask about a specific situation rather than about yourself in general, presuppose that there is something to say, and make it cheap to answer. Broad requests get reassurance because reassurance is the safe reply to a broad request.
